24 head of Highland cattle, cold and snowy weather has made
the 2007-2008 winter a long one. The
cattle don’t seem to mind the cold and snow.
They have icicles hanging off their long hair and sound like a wind chime
when they move about. Even though
they have a 3 sided shed to go into, they seem to like being out in the weather.
We
had a good year calving with 6 heifers and 4 bulls during 2007.
We used 2 bulls in 2006 and
it was real interesting to see the difference between the two sire’s calves. LEA
Broderick is a bull that we bought from LEA-White Farms in Michigan.
We purchased him as a yearling and this was his first calf crop.
We were very pleased with them. Several
have been sold already and one that Shaine Nelson has was Reserve Champion
Female in the Junior show at Denver this year.
She also won her class in the open show.
We are so proud of both Shaine and We Tired
Katelyn (see photo). There is
also a bull calf by Broderick that we plan on keeping and promoting this year.
The other bull we used in 2006 is We Tired Barney.
He is a Hannegan Joe grandson out of a cow that is a Summit Ranch Hail
daughter. We are very proud of our 5
Hail daughters and crossed Barney with the other 4.
Those calves are leggy and growing extremely fast.
These crosses were the first of the We Tired heifers being bred to a We
Tired bull. We crossed those same
heifers with the Broderick bull last year and are expecting calves starting in
April. That will be good to compare
the offspring. We
had sold all of our 2005 calf crop (except for Barney) so we will not have
any first calf heifers calving this year. Barney
was leased out last year and he is expecting about 25 Hereford crosses this
year. That will also be good to see
what that market will be.
Most of our cows were older when we bought our original
herd. Two of those cows are now 18
years old and showing there age. They
both had calves last year and they were exceptional animals.
We just hope to get a few more years out of the old girls.
We want to thank all of you that bought cattle from us in
the last few years and invite anyone else to come and visit us and see what kind
of animals we raise. We
are
proud of our herd, they have not
only done well in the show ring but our cattle sales have introduced new
Highland enthusiast to the breed.
We also continue to have bulls, heifers and bred cows for sale if that
interests you. We are anxious to
hear from those people that we sold animals to, as to what they are having for
calves.
Lets hope for an early spring and lots of fuzzy healthy
calves.
